Grand Canyon Skywalk

Created by Las Vegas tour operator David Jin, the Grand Canyon Skywalk attracts about 1 million visitors every year who seek a unique perspective of the majestic views of nature’s most mesmerizing landmarks.  Located at the Hualapai Indian Reservation at the west region of the Grand Canyon, the Skywalk opened to the public on March 20, 2007 in a ceremony lead by astronaut Buzz Aldrin.  The Skywalk extends about 70 feet over the edge of the canyon wall and provides unparalled views of the Grand Canyon and the Colorado River at a 4,770 feet elevation.  Thanks to the German imported glass-bottomed bridge, the Skywalk delivers a truly one of a kind experience and perspective into the Grand Canyon.  The platform was originally set to be a rectangular structure, but eventually evolved into a U shaped formation constructed of glass and steel.  Due to its remote location, the Skywalk must be self-maintained.  Diesel generators provide all the power to both the bridge itself as well as the visitor’s center.  Water is supplied by outside sources as waste is trucked out.  In October 2009, a satellite repeater was installed to allow visitors cellular phone reception.  As of now, the Skywalk features an outdoor dining facility called The Skywalk Café, but future plans include a museum, movie theater, VIP lounge, gift shops, and additional restaurants for guests to visit.  In the near future, the Hualapai tribe plans to further develop this area to accommodate the many tourists that visit each year.  They hope to bring hotels, a golf course, and to install a cable car from the canyon rim to the Colorado River to attract even more guests.
