Weather conditions at the Grand Canyon are generally pleasant, which make for beautiful views of the spectacular landscape. Summer at the canyon can be particularly warm with temperatures reaching 80-100 degrees. It’s not uncommon to experience thunderstorms throughout the summer, as they generally occur during July, August, and early September. Temperatures in the canyon usually reach a high at the very peak of the rims. However, due to increased the elevation of about 1,000 feet, the North Rim temperatures are typically cooler than the South during the summer.
Summer thunderstorms may also carry on into the Fall season of the Grand Canyon, but the climate is generally cooler during this time of year. While the fall will usually bring a dryer season, the occasional rain or thunderstorm may present itself as we approach the winter season.
Winter conditions can be rough with snow, frozen roads, ice trails and the unforeseen road closures. The North Rim of the canyon is closed during this time. Be sure to check the weather conditions before planning a trip to the Grand Canyon during the winter, otherwise you may be met with a harsh climate. It should also be noted that views of the landscape may be difficult to masked during winter storms.
By springtime, warm weather usually begins to govern the Grand Canyon but may still be met by the occasional thunderstorm in May. Many consider this to be the most pleasant weather during which to visit the canyon, so you may want to look into scheduling your trip during these months.
It’s imperative to remember that the Grand Canyon is a desert and that your body may take some time adapting to it. Always remember to drink plenty of fluids to keep from becoming dehydrated. This is especially important for the avid hiker, as their bodies require more water during outdoor activities. Keep in mind the weather at the canyon can be extremely unpredictable and it’s always a good thing to bring clothingto suit all weather conditions. |
